In 1996, as a car salesman in Chicago, I stumbled upon a Wired magazine left behind by a customer. From that moment, I was hooked. Purchasing my first PC shortly after, I, like many newcomers to the online world, spent countless hours in AOL chat rooms (until the revelation that most of my feamle chat companions were, in fact, male).

A few months later, intrigued by webpage construction, I attempted to create one for the dealership. In a twist of fate, I briefly owned the domain cars.com for 48 hours. Lacking a credit card for the $38 registration fee, my requests for assistance were met with refusal from colleagues and the dealership owner, who doubted the significance of owning a website.

Fast forward a couple of years, still at the same dealership, I stumbled upon a Chicago Tribune article discussing the escalating value of domain names. Cars.com, once briefly in my possession, had sold for 2.3 million dollars. The missed opportunity lingers in my memory. (today, its worth 1.2 billion dollars)
